Benefits of School Choice for Students with Special Needs in Texas

September 23, 2025
By Leigh Weedman

All children should have an education that helps them shine, and for families of students with special needs, finding the right school can make all the difference. Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, Texas children will have a new path to access educational options that are tailored to their unique strengths, challenges and future goals..

Families of children with disabilities know that “one size fits all” rarely works. School choice allows parents to select the setting—public, charter, private, or specialized—that best aligns with their child’s needs rather than being limited by their zip code.

Key Benefits of School Choice for Special Needs in Texas

  1. Individualized Learning
Some students learn best through hands-on, visual instruction. Others need frequent breaks, flexible pacing, or specialized technology. School choice empowers families to select programs designed to meet these needs.

  2. Access to Specialized Programs
Texas offers a variety of schools that focus specifically on students with disabilities—programs with staff trained in behavioral supports, communication strategies, or life skills training. Families can seek out environments where teachers understand both the academic and developmental needs of their child.

  3. Improved Outcomes and Confidence
When children are in the right setting, they often make academic gains, build stronger friendships, and grow in independence.

  4. Greater Family Empowerment and Support
Instead of navigating conflicts with a system that may not be equipped to provide the right services, parents can select a school that already aligns with their values, expectations, and hopes for their child’s future.

  5. Opportunities for Inclusion and Belonging
For some students, this means being part of a general education classroom with accommodations. For others, it means learning in a smaller, specialized setting. School choice recognizes that finding the ‘best fit’ looks different for every child.
